According to Division 240, a waterproof and buoyant handheld VHF radio is mandatory on board all vessels navigating more than 60 nautical miles from a safe haven (in addition to a fixed VHF radio). It is merely recommended for coastal navigation within 2 nautical miles of a safe haven.
