There are several checks to perform on a connecting rod to ensure that it is in good condition.
It all starts with a wash in order to be able to make an initial visual check. Then, a metrological check is carried out, that is, taking measurements of the bearing surfaces (connecting rods and main bearings) to check the dimension and determine the need for change, if the wear of the crankshaft is not too pronounced.
We also perform a deflection check to verify the correct alignment of the bearing surfaces (longitudinal check). It is possible to straighten a crankshaft whose alignment is no longer optimal up to a deflection of approximately 3 to 4/10ths (depending on the size of the crankshaft).
Finally, it is often necessary to carry out a magnetic particle (or radio) scan to look for cracks, when the crankshaft has overheated following a drop in lubrication.
